Tallybook is an expense tracker for iPhone, iPad and Mac that reads your receipts and files them as plain files you own. It is made by typif.ai (“we”). This policy explains what happens to your information when you use it.
What we collect
Nothing. Tallybook does not collect, transmit or share any personal data with us or with anyone else. There is no Tallybook account and no Tallybook server. Tallybook contains no analytics, advertising, crash-reporting or tracking code, and we never sell or share data, because we never have it.
Where your expenses live
Each expense is a plain Markdown file, with its receipt saved alongside it as a PDF, in a Tallybook folder in your iCloud Drive: Expenses/2026/10/2026-10-14_Vendor.md and Attachments/. Each file holds what you or the app filled in: vendor, date, total, sales tax, currency, category, payment method, tags, notes, the receipt's line items, and the text read from the receipt. Your list of categories is one more file in the same folder, Categories.md.
If you're signed in to iCloud, these files sync across your devices through your own iCloud Drive. That storage belongs to your Apple Account, and we have no access to it. Apple stores it under Apple's Privacy Policy. If iCloud Drive is off, the files stay in the app's storage on that device only.
Because they're ordinary files, you can open, copy, move or back them up with any app you like, such as Files, Finder or Obsidian. Tallybook doesn't connect to those apps; they simply read the same files.
What Tallybook keeps on your device
- A search index of your expenses, so lists, filters and the dashboard are fast. It's built from your files, kept in the app's own storage on each device, never synced, and rebuilt from the files whenever needed.
- Your settings, such as appearance.
- Finder tags (Mac only): the tags you give an expense are also set as Finder tags on its file, so you can find it in Finder.
Reading receipts on your device
Text on a receipt is recognized by Apple's on-device text recognition. On devices with Apple Intelligence, Apple's on-device language model then picks out the vendor, date, total, sales tax and category, and the receipt's line items with a category for each. On other devices, you fill those in yourself. Everything the recognizer and model see stays on your device. Nothing is sent to us, to Apple, or to any other AI service to be processed.
Camera and photos
On iPhone and iPad, Tallybook uses the camera only when you choose to scan a paper receipt, through Apple's document scanner. To add a receipt from your photo library, you pick it in Apple's Photos picker, and Tallybook sees only the photos you pick. On Mac, you choose a receipt file yourself. You can turn off camera access at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera.
Share extension
If you share a receipt to Tallybook from another app, such as a PDF from Mail or a photo, Tallybook copies the files you shared (up to ten at a time) into the app's storage on your device and adds each one as a new expense. It sees only what you share, and only when you share it.
Network access
Tallybook has no server and makes no network requests of its own, in the app or its share extension. The only thing that leaves your device is iCloud Drive syncing your own files, which Apple handles.
Exporting your data
You can export what you're looking at (everything, a month, or a category) as a CSV file or as a zip of the files and receipts. The export is created on your device and goes only where you choose to save or send it.
Deleting your data
Deleting an expense in Tallybook deletes its file and its receipt. Discarding a new receipt you don't want deletes that receipt. Files deleted from iCloud Drive can be recovered for a time from Recently Deleted in Files, or at iCloud.com. Deleting the app from an iPhone or iPad removes its index and settings from that device; your files stay in your iCloud Drive until you delete the Tallybook folder yourself.
Children
Tallybook is not directed at children, and it collects no data from anyone, including children.
Changes
If a future version ever needs a network service of our own, this policy will be updated before that version ships, and the change will be described on this page with a new date.
